Regulations and Entry Requirements for Galapagos Cruising

Inspection

Every type of vessel, regardless of the reason for the visit, with or without a permit, will go through an inspection upon its arrival. The Environmental Risk Assessment consists of an interior and exterior (hull) inspection that will determine if the vessel can navigate in the waters around the Galapagos Marine Reserve.

Entry Permit

All private boats and yachts visiting the Galapagos Islands are required to have an entry permit - called the Autógrafo - from the Ministry of Defense of Ecuador. Permits must be obtained before navigating in the Galapagos Marine Reserve. It’s recommended that visitors start the permit request process at least two months in advance.
An Autógrafo is entry authorization provided by the government of Ecuador. The Galapagos sailing permit required for private boats and yachts which:
• Will be navigating within the Galapagos Marine Reserve & National Park.
• Will be navigating between local ports.

How to obtain an autógrafo

In order to request an Autógrafo cruising permit for the Galapagos Islands, the following documents are required:
• Copy of the yacht registration.
• Documentation reporting the measurements and technical information of the yacht, including length, beam, draft, gross tonnage, flag nationality, official number and name of the boat, call sign and MMSI of the vessel.
• Black water or sewage certification.
• Proof that the yacht has Automatic Identification System (AIS) transmitter and receiver.
• Copy of crew and passenger list, along with their nationalities.
• Copy of all crew and passenger passports.
• Declaration of the estimated arrival date and length of stay in the Galapagos Islands.

Galapagos Cruising Permit Park Authorization

It is possible to obtain a cruising permit to the Galapagos for more limited access to the islands. This process is generally faster and less extensive. For more information click on the button that applies to you.

Once the Autógrafo has been secured, the National Park Directory must authorize the specific Galapagos cruise itinerary. It’s important to note that each boat is also required to have a certified nature guide onboard during their visit. Scientific Expeditions

For a vessels navigating in the Galapagos waters for the purpose of scientific research, the following documentation is required:
• Authorization from the Galapagos National Park;
• Authorization from a scientific or educational organization in Ecuador;
• Autógrafo permit for entry issued by the government of mainland Ecuador.

Emergency Arrivals and Vessels in Transit

In case of emergency or for bunkering purposes, a yacht without an Autógrafo, or required cruising permit, can stop in the area. Special authorization is necessary and the yacht arriving will be directed toward a particular port. Permission to enter the waters around the Galapagos Islands is regulated by the Maritime Authority at the moment of arrival and following the required inspections.

Each boat approaching will need to provide:
• Report of damages, if possible;
• Copy of the yacht registration;
• Documentation reporting the measurements and technical information of the yacht, including length, beam, draft, gross tonnage
• Documentation reporting the flag nationality, official number and name of the boat, call sign and MMSI of the vessel;
• Copy of crew and passenger list, along with their nationalities;
• Copy of all crew and passenger passports;
• Proof that the yacht has Automatic Identification System (AIS) transmitter and receiver;
• Last port clearance stating the intended destination of the vessel;
• Fumigation certification for the last port.
